A Taste of Umbria: The Essence of Italian Living
July 27 - August 4, 2024

Central Italy is full of natural and artistic treasures, and local traditions that have been part of the Italian lifestyle for generations. To experience a culture through its culinary history and traditions gives a depth of understanding about that culture that is hard to replicate at any tourist attraction. Get a taste of the Umbrian region, both literally through its cuisine, and figuratively through its history, cultural significance, and surrounding natural beauty. This program gives you the opportunity to build deep connections with these facets of true Italian life and provides you with a culturally rich, reflective, and meaningful experience. Learn about the treasures (both culinary and historic) that are unique to the Umbrian region, the local traditions that are still alive today, and reflect on how the Italian lifestyle compares to your own.


14-day SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAMs : Elevate your artistic craft

The art of seeing: Summer Photography Intensive
July 12-26, 2024

This 14-day summer intensive program offers experienced photographers the opportunity to master their photographic skills while working in the beautiful city of Spoleto, Italy. Students learn how to overcome challenges and begin to create powerful, personal images. Students also explore their creative potential and understand how to identify which equipment is best suited for a particular photographic genre, be inspired about making and editing work, and gain the tools and confidence to develop a disciplined process and explore one's creative potential.

 

THE ART OF MOVEMENT: SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE Summer 2025

The dance intensive at Spoleto Study Abroad allows you to physically express yourself through movement. The course emphasizes technical and improvisational skills with others by studying a variety of including: modern technique, improvisation and composition, jazz, body conditioning, repertory.

 

The Art of Personal Expression: Summer Visual Arts Intensive
July 12-26, 2024

Roman relics, medieval frescos, and Renaissance masterpieces frame this experience immersing students in the historic and natural beauty of Spoleto. Students will derive inspiration for their artwork from the architecture, gardens, and culture that surrounds them. Back in the studio, students will work with varied drawing mediums to render figures and form. Exercises are targeted to expand a students’ skill base bringing their drawing/painting to a higher level. Students will gain insight into their personal sense of voice through exploration of subject matter and will gain an experience that will be the scaffolding to their higher education.

 

The Art of Reflection: Summer Creative Writing Intensive
July 12-26, 2024

Deepen your written craft through intentional observation and reflection. Learn to see beneath the surface and ask the deeper questions, honing your unique voice. Read a diverse sample of short works to guide and inspire your personal introspection, and learn to better translate your thoughts and feelings to the page.

 

THE ART OF SONG: SUMMER VOCAL MUSIC INTENSIVE JULY 12-26, 2024

Italy — the birthplace of opera. There may be no better environment in which to pursue a program of vocal study than right in the heart of Umbria! Individualized voice lessons will focus on matters of vocal technique such as posture, breath management, and registration, while coaching sessions will address musical style, diction, and interpretation. Daily group instruction in small ensembles will engage with music from a vast historical range, from madrigals to opera and beyond.


Teaching Fellows Program

This program is geared toward educational faculty who have been teaching for three years or less. Those selected will run the residential life program during the student summer programs, staying in the convent with the students, while also receiving training in collaborative, experienced-based instruction in the stimulating natural setting of a medieval hill town, Spoleto, Italy.
